1st OPERA AND ORATORIO MASTERCLASS IN SYROS

The 1st Opera Masterclass in the island of Syros is becoming a reality!

Two well renowned opera singers, baritone Aris Argiris  and soprano Antonia Caloghirou will teach the secrets of belcanto, Italian, French and German Opera,

but also Oratorio and sacred music.

It will take place to the medieval,fully restored Convent of Carmelite Nuns up the Hill of Ano Syros.

The Masterclass will take place in Syros, an island belonging to the Cycladic islands, from August 7 to August 16, 2019 at the fully restored and renovated historic medieval Carmelites Convent located on Ano Syros hill.
The Masterclass will end with a recital of all active participants.
 
Students will be accommodated in twin bed rooms with private bathroom. 
There is also a common kitchen and dinning room.
Due to the limited number of rooms the number of participants can not exceed 20.
If you prefer, you can find different accommodation at your own expense.
In this case the accommodation fee will be deducted from the Masterclass fee.

TERMS OF PARTICIPATION

Valid application should be sent before the announced expire date. Professors will evaluate the candidates’ applications. Active participants will be informed about the results shortly by e-mail. The active participants must attend all the courses of the Masterclass. They have to be fully prepared regarding the selected arias. Hosting guests at the Convent Is not allowed. All the participants (active and auditors) are kindly requested to respect and keep clean the common areas as well as their dorm rooms. Alexandroupolis Music Society keeps the right to record the entire course as well the final recital. Copies of recordings will be available to the active members only.

*In case the seminar is canceled all the participants (active and auditors) will get a full refund of their tuition fees.

**Partial refund in case of cancellation due to personal reasons: 400€ for active participants with accomodation, 250€ for active participants without accomodation, and for the auditors the fee is not refundable.

 

The masterclasses program includes study of Italian, French and German Opera and Oratorio repertoire (mostly arias). Please inform us in advance about the arias you would like to work on.

Teachers of the masterclass are Aris Argiris, baritone and professor at UDK University, Berlin and Antonia Caloghirou, soprano, former professor at Opera Studio of Greek National Opera (GNO). Pianist will be available and included in the course fee.
 
Lessons will begin at 09:00 till 15:00 with a 30 min. pause
Afternoons are free for studying.

Internationally-acclaimed Greek baritone Aris Argiris is one of the leading singers in front of the opera and concert public today. He has worked with conductors such as: Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, Christian Thielemann, Yakov Kreizberg, Gustav Kuhn, Donato Renzetti, Manfred Honeck, Walter Attanasi, Graeme Jenkins, Carlo Franci, Antonello Allemandi, Patrick Lange and Carlo Rizzi.

After fix engagements at Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen, at Theater Dortmund and at Oper Bonn, he was member of Oper Frankfurt.

Since then he wa invited to international places like Arena di Verona, St. Petersburg, Opera di Montreal, Gärtnerplatztheater München, Athens Festival in Herodes Atticus, Gluck International Festival, Musiktheater im Revier, Semperoper Dresden, Vlaamse Opera, Les Theatres de la Villes de Luxembourg, Theatre de la Monnaie, Theater Freiburg, Theater an der Wien, Theater Chemnitz, Scottish Opera, Theater St. Gallen, Theater Bern , Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of M° Zubin Mehta, Staatsoper Hamburg, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, Essen Aalto Musiktheater, Theater Bonn, San Diego Opera, NNT Tokyo, Staatsoper Berlin and Savonlinna Opera Festival.

His repertoire includes Wotan in Die Walküre, Scarpia (Tosca), Rigoletto (G. Verdi), Amonasro (G. Verdi), Don Giovanni, Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Jochanaan (Salome), Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Escamillo (Carmen), G. Germont (La Traviata), Marcello (La Bohéme), Rodrigo di Posa (Don Carlo),  Conte d’Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Lord Enrico Asthon (Lucia di Lammermoor), Frank/Fritz (Die tote Stadt), Valentin (Faust), Francesco (I Masnadieri), The Four Villains (Les Contes d'Hoffman).

Born in Athens he studied with Kostas Paskalis, Frangiskos Voutsinos and Despina Calafati in his home town. In 1999 he received the Maria-Callas-Scholarship in Athens and continued his vocal studies in the masterclasses of Prof. Daphne Evangelatos at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. In 2002 Mr. Agiris won the International singing competition at Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, where he sang the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

Aris Argiris recorded “Das Wunder der Heliane” from W.E.Korngold singing the demanding role of the Ruler “Der Herrscher” with the Orchestra of Freiburg under the baton of Patrice Bollon with NAXOS label, and Ariadne – Dithyrambos for baritone and orchestra by Siegfried Matthus and Holoferne’s aria from Matthus´ Judith with the label Genuin and can be seen singing Escamillo in the first 3D opera-movie, which is based on the Royal Opera House Carmen production of 2010, directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by Constantinos Carydis.

Antonia Caloghirou is a Greek soprano born in Athens. She studied piano with the Austrian pianist Max Hallecker. She won MARIA CALLAS scholarship and continued her studies in Belgium (Conservatoire Royal de Liège with José van Dam and Jane Berbié and in Italy with Mo Arrigo Pola. She also studied with barytone John Modenos and great Greek bass George Pappas.
 She participated at masterclasses of conductor Dimitris Chorafas, Sherill Milnes, Ghena Dimitrova, Rudolf Knoll, Anna Tomowa-Sintow. 
She also studied at the OPERA STUDIO of the Academia di Santa Cecila in Rome.
She won the 1st Price at the International Singing Competition MARIA CALLAS (Category of Oratorio-Lied), and was distinguished in several International Competionons (Città di Adria, Concorso Tito Schipa, Concorso Verdi di Parma).
As a soloist she collaborates with all major Greek Orchestras, and the Greek National Opera. 
Her debut as a soloist was made with the Fantasia for piano, soloists, chorus and orchestra of L. van Beethoven at the age of 18 years old, then continued with
H. Purcell's Dido & Aeneas (Dido), Il Matrimonio Segreto, Die Zauberflöte (Pamina, 1ste Dame, 2ter Dame), La Traviata, Carmen, La Bohème (Mimi), Pagliacci, Simone Boccanegra, Otello, Un Ballo in Maschera, Nabucco, Medjé,  Kostas Kariotakis, Stiffelio, Lady Macbeth of District Mtsensk
She was professor  of vocal technique and interpretation at the OPERA STUDIO of Greek National Opera. For her artistic achievements has been decorated with the Medal of Value of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem

Markos Kotsias was born in 1986 in Athens, taking first piano lessons in 1999 with George Ioannidis, furthering his education in Athens Conservatory (class H. Tombra)and in Athens University Music studies department, and completing his musical and piano studies in Philippos Nakas Conservatory (A. Papastefanou's class) and Musikhochschule Stuttgart, Germany (class of prof. A. Marchand, K.A. Diplom Klavier). He won First Prize on Yamaha's YMFE piano competition 2008. He participated in piano masterclasses of pianists of international fame (K.Gerstein, P.Nagy, F. Nicolosi), performed in series of recitals and chamber music concerts in Germany and Greece and is distinguished as a soloist and singer accompanist with both classical and modern greek music repertoire, having played alongside numerous acclaimed artists. He collaborated with soprano Sonia Theodoridou in recordings and appearances in major concert halls throughout Greece and eastern europe. He has worked as a pianist/accompanist/instructor at the Hellenic Conservatory, Melissa art school, Aegean Festival of Syros, conducting masterclasses of Michalis Economou etc. From 2015 and for two years he works as a full-time pianist, ballet instructor, keyboardist and opera accompanist of the National Opera of Greece. He is currently appearing in the "Vembo-Callas: an imaginary encounter" production with singers Katia Paschou and Argyro Kaparou. He is teaching piano class in "AMADEUS" Conservatory of Athens.
